Before I developed the Recording Mindset – I was struggling with creating tracks that sounded as good as my favorite records.

Just like many other home-studio musicians…

Whenever I felt inspired to record a song, I’d start to set up some microphones, placing them randomly, and hoping that I had the sweet spot.

But then I’d hit record, and my tracks would sound so bad.

…They’d sound thin, harsh, dull, or boomy.

I kind of thought this was just how it was supposed to be and that the mixing stage would make everything sound better.

…But despite how good I got at mixing, my tracks still never sounded better than “demo” quality.

…It was so frustrating. It had me completely questioning everything.

But then an opportunity came up that changed everything for me…

I had the opportunity to get in a studio and watch some pro engineers at work…

Right from the beginning, I was floored at how good their raw tracks sounded.

…They were better than any mix I had ever made.

That’s when I realized they didn’t rely on fixing stuff later on… They spent the time to get it right at the source.

As a result, this caused me to completely rethink my entire process…

After several months of trial and error…

… Testing things out, making mistakes, and figuring out things the hard way…

I finally reached a point where I felt confident enough getting amazing recordings.

And I wasn’t just using a set-and-forget method…

…Instead, I knew exactly how to adapt my setup depending on the type of songs I was working on or the sounds I was chasing.

…It’s like having a series of mental checklists to go through to lead you to the right decisions.
